What to Expect on a Greater MKE 4x4 Trail Ride

  • Off-road driving is potentially dangerous to people and your vehicle. Never wheel alone, and plan ahead for the safety of everyone on the trails.

  • Our ride leaders are volunteers, not professional guides. If your vehicle becomes disabled, we will assist you but we do not guarantee recovery.

  • The properties where we ride determine the size vehicles that are allowed/able to navigate the trails. We strongly recommend that larger, heavier vehicles be able to self-recover. If you have questions, please ask.

  • Front and rear tow-points and a full-size spare are MANDATORY on our rides.
  • Arrive early enough to give yourself time to prepare your vehicle for going off-road, including airing down, disconnecting sway bars if applicable, hooking up a tow-strap, and securing/tying down everything in your vehicle.
  • We use GMRS radio to communicate while driving.
  • Everyone in your vehicle must have and use a seatbelt.
  • Everyone in your vehicle should wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes/boots regardless of weather.
  • Most people bring a lunch and eat on the trail (or in parking lot).
  • There are bathrooms at trail-heads and near parking lots, but typically not on the trails.
  • Plan to show proof of insurance, sign a waiver, and conduct a self-check safety inspection – your vehicle must be licensed, registered, and insured.
  • Know how to put your vehicle in 4-low.
  • Some properties have an air compressor, but not all. Plan how you will air back up – most people bring a portable compressor or 12-volt/cigarette lighter inflator.
  • Bring a garbage bag and pack out anything that you bring in, including cigarette butts.
  • Bring water and snacks.

Mater on Metal Masher

Check out Greater MKE 4x4 member Willy in his 1997 Jeep TJ Sport "Sno Mater" with 2.5" lift and 33" tires in Moab, UT last year! The trail is called "Metal Masher" and that crunching sound is Mater's snow plow frame on the front of the Jeep. Guiding/Spotting is James. Video credit to Brian M.
